Besides skin cancers, Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American Men. Besides lung cancer, it causes more deaths in men than any other single cancer site. The risk of prostate cancer increases with age. The risk doubles each decade after 50 and peaks at age 70. Unfortunately there is no great screening test that we can use to tell us if a person has prostate cancer. The tests currently used in medicine will cause a substantial number of people without prostate cancer to undergo painful and expensive procedures when they indeed have no disease. This is the cause of some controversy in medical circles. The answer is one of public policy, but if you are the one undergoing a needless procedure or the one with a missed prostate cancer, public policy quickly becomes very personal. There may be no perfect answer. This controversy only highlights the importance of a team approach between a person and their physician. I urge you to speak with your Doctor about testing for prostate cancer. Working as a team the two of you can come to an informed decision that you will both be satisfied with.
