Did you know that 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime? Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. It can often be effectively diagnosed and treated with minimal impact on long term health because of today’s modern diagnostic methods and newer techniques for treatment. The key is early detection and treatment. An early lesion is easier to treat than a more advanced lesion. The United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends mammograms for women age 40 and older. For some women with higher risk due to genetic causes or lifestyle, a screening baseline mammogram between the ages of 35-40 may be appropriate. Early detection of breast cancer with a mammogram allows for less invasive treatment and is the best and easiest way to avoid disfigurement and pain.
A yearly clinical breast exam and education on breast self-exam could also help to identify suspicious lesions early.
