Patients are asking their doctors for antibiotics when they are not needed, and some Doctors are prescribing them anyway. In a recent study done in the journal of Pediatrics one third of doctors admitted that they often complied with a parent’s request to prescribe antibiotics even when they were not needed. Most people know that antibiotics are only effective against bacterial infections and not viral infections. If antibiotics are given when they are not needed they can be harmful instead of helpful. In another study done in Atlanta Georgia, 84% of parents indicated they would accept a physician’s decision not to prescribe antibiotics for an illness that included a fever, if the physician would have taken the time to explain why they were not prescribing them. The best recommendation is to let the doctor make the call, but be sure to ask your physician to communicate the reasons behind the decision.
