If you were near the end of your life in a hospital and unable to communicate, whom would you want to make treatment decisions for you? Would you like to make those decisions yourself, or maybe a close relative? How would you like an acquaintance making those life and death decisions for you? You can have input into end of life decisions yourself using an advanced directive. Although Advanced directives are widely supported and encouraged in America, few people actually have advanced directives or a living will. Advanced directives are a way to discuss with your doctor the kind of care you would like, or would not like, if you were at the end of your life and unable to communicate your wishes. Consider writing an advanced directive so an acquaintance will not be making important end-of-life decisions for you without your input.
